Rod, hook, line and Cinque Ports

The Romney Marshes - Lydd and the Cinque Ports in particular - offer some fantastic coarse angling sites with a 28 mile canal, large lakes and several rivers to chose from providing something for all tastes. Romney Marsh Times grabs its rod and license for a visit to 4 of the top angling sites in South Kent.


Lydd fishing and angling club
Mid Kent Fisheries maintains a large lake of approximately 12 acres at Lydd from where Carp from 10lb to 30lb have been caught. Nearby Lydd Angling Club operates swims at Herons Park, Lydd, for Bream, Carp, Roach and Tench and the good Tench water Long Lakes just a few miles down the road at Dungeness.

Royal Military Canal
The Royal Military Canal which runs across the Romney Marshes provides one of the best coarse water fishing areas in Kent with a large variety of species.

Fish found in the Canal include Pike, Carp, Tench, Perch, Roach, Bream, Trout, Rudd and eels. Carp have been found up to 33lbs while Pike of up to 26lbs have been caught.

Fishing is along the Canal is largely by club control but it is possible to fish in parts without club membership and much of the club controlled areas without membership using a day-parse.

River Rother
Rother Fishery Association runs 11 miles of the river with Hastings, Bexhill And District Freshwater Angling Association running other stretches. Stocks include good numbers of Chub, Dace, Roach and occasional Trout with Bream and Pike present in the lower stretches.

Rye Nook
Rye Nook fishery near Rye contains four lakes spanning over 100acres with over 100 swims containing some huge specimen fish including 30lb Carp, Bream to almost 5lb, Tench up to 8lb, shoals of Roach to 2lb and Perch of up to 2lb; eels of over 8lbs have also been caught.
