Storm batters SE Kent

weather kentWind and rain have battered SE Kent today - 14th November - as the worst storm of the year moved East across the country. At its peak, wind speeds of nearly 90 miles an hour resulted in cross channel ferry crossings being suspended, delays to train services from Ashford and power cuts to parts of Romney Marsh.

Sea France, LD Lines and P & O Ferries all experienced significant delays on their cross Channel routes and the Port of Dover was closed for much of the afternoon with winds gusting up to force 10 reported in the Channel. Trains faired slightly better but Southeastern trains to and from Ashford ran up to 50 minutes behind schedule and services between the station and Otford were still suffering disruption into the early evening with diversions and replacement bus services in operation.

Homes in parts of Romney Marsh lost power, with a blackout cutting power to part of Lydd for 15 minutes mid afternoon.

Weather forecasters say the worst of the storm was over by the middle of the afternoon.
