Despite earlier predictions that Kent would escape the worst of the current snow and ice, weather forecasts are tonight in state of flux with most forecasters now warning of snow across Kent tonight and tomorrow morning with SE Kent expected to catch the brunt of the snowfall. Police have issued travel advisories and Southeastern Railways will be operating a greatly reduced timetable in the morning.
The MET Office has updated its the status for SE Kent from "Be aware" to "Be Prepared" and issued warning of snow in the coastal areas of 2 to 5cm and even up to 10cm while BBC Weather is predicting significant falls of snow mainly over southern and western areas.
The MET Office is also saying that the current cold snap is the worst in 20 years.
In the face of the adverse weather forecasts, authorities are expecting problematic travel conditions on both roads and railways in the morning.
Southeastern has warned of service disruptions tomorrow (Wednesday) with services being cut in anticipation of snow and ice. National Rail is showing Southeastern as running the following service frequencies for Wednesday:
* Ashford to London Victoria via Maidstone East - half hourly service
* Ashford to London Charing Cross - half hourly service
* Ramsgate to Ashford via Canterbury West - hourly service
* Ramsgate to Ashford via Dover Priory - hourly service
* Hastings to Tonbridge - hourly service
* Faversham to London Victoria - half hourly service
* Dover Priory to Faversham via Canterbury East - hourly service
* Ramsgate to Faversham via Margate - hourly service
* Strood to Paddock Wood - hourly service
Kent police meanwhile are advising motorists to check the weather forecast before travelling and allow extra time when planning journeys. Assistant Chief Constable Gary Beautridge said, "Motorists need to stay prepared for the next few days. Please allow extra time for your journey and make sure you have warm clothing, food and drink supplies with you. If the weather is severe, please only travel if your journey is absolutely necessary.
"Pedestrians too should take great care as conditions underfoot can be treacherous.
"If you have elderly or vulnerable neighbours or relatives, then please remember to check on them to ensure they are safe and well."
